MOOREVILLE, Miss. — Baldwyn had a two-touchdown lead when a high punt snap gave the Bearcats another opening. They needed less than half a minute of game time to turn it into an eight-point swing.
A safety and Rush Watkins' touchdown pass to Kaden Agnew stretched the lead to 22-0 in the second quarter Friday, September 18, at Steve Bass Field. Mooreville answered before halftime, but Calvin Price's second rushing touchdown helped Baldwyn finish a 29-12 road win.
Price carried 24 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns as the Bearcats improved to 3-1. Mooreville fell to 2-2 despite 194 passing yards from Cameron Cady and a 143-yard receiving night from Jett Hussey.
The opening possessions gave both defenses a chance to settle in. Agnew intercepted Cady, then Mooreville's Kolby Hart picked off Watkins to give the Troopers the ball back. Neither early interception immediately produced points.
Baldwyn broke through with 5:11 left in the first quarter. Price took a pitch to the left, got outside behind his blockers and scored for a 7-0 lead.
The Bearcats had to work through mistakes on their next scoring drive. Back-to-back false starts put them behind the chains before Watkins found Colton Hayes for a first down. Price later converted a third-and-four to keep the possession going. Early in the second quarter, Watkins faked a pitch and threw over the middle to Hayes for the touchdown. The extra point made it 14-0 with 9:47 left in the half.
Then Mooreville's punt snap sailed over the punter. The ball was recovered in the end zone for a safety, giving Baldwyn a 16-0 lead at the 8:19 mark and possession after the free kick.
Starting in Mooreville territory, the Bearcats went back to Price. He broke a tackle on a pitch and picked up a first down along the sideline. Watkins finished the short possession with a touchdown pass to Agnew. The extra point missed, but Baldwyn led 22-0 with 7:53 left in the second quarter.
Mooreville got an answer from its passing game. Cady rolled right and found Jerry Meredith over the middle on a slant for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 22-6 with 5:02 left before halftime. Kason Mathis intercepted Watkins late in the half, but the Troopers could not add another score before the break.
Mooreville forced a punt on Baldwyn's first possession of the second half and kept the score at 22-6 through the third quarter. The Troopers still needed two scoring drives and conversions to draw even. Price's fourth-quarter touchdown, followed by the extra point, pushed the margin to 29-6.
Mooreville added a late touchdown, but its two-point pass fell incomplete. The Troopers finished with touchdown catches from Meredith and Hussey, who caught eight passes for 143 yards. Cady completed 13 of 27 throws for 194 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Mathis added 76 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Watkins finished 7-of-14 for 124 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Hayes caught four passes for 82 yards, while Agnew contributed a touchdown catch and an interception. Behind Price, Baldwyn rushed for 246 yards and finished with 370 yards of total offense.
