SHANNON — Every time one team seemed to have an answer Thursday night, the other found another question to ask. Pontotoc had the early lead. Shannon took control in the second half. The Warriors came back to put their unbeaten record within reach of another escape.
Then Danelius Conner found the left side of the end zone, and Shannon had the last answer.
Conner’s fourth-and-goal touchdown in the closing seconds lifted the Red Raiders to a 38–35 homecoming victory at Mike Scott Field, ending Pontotoc’s perfect start in a game that refused to settle down until the final pass hit the turf.
Shannon improved to 4–2. Pontotoc fell to 4–1. Those records tell where the teams stand after Thursday. They do little to explain how much each had to give to get through it.
The Warriors came in off a 35–7 win over New Albany, but there was no comfortable cushion waiting for them here. Pontotoc struck first, and by the first quarter the teams had traded enough offense to leave the Warriors ahead 14–12. Shannon was already making clear that its homecoming night would take more than an early lead to spoil.
Pontotoc kept the pressure on in the second quarter. The Red Raiders answered again, cutting into the Warriors’ advantage and keeping the game close enough that every possession mattered. Neither defense could count on its offense having done enough.

After halftime, Shannon began turning those answers into a lead of its own. Pontotoc held a narrow 21–20 advantage during the third quarter before the Red Raiders moved in front 26–21. That five-point lead carried into the fourth, putting the Warriors in the position Shannon had occupied earlier: chasing the next score.
Pontotoc did not go quietly. The Warriors’ offense brought them back into the game, and the fourth quarter became another exchange of blows. Shannon was ahead 32–28 during that stretch, but even 32 points were not enough to make the Red Raiders safe.
The Warriors answered once more to go ahead 35–32. With time running down, the visitors had put themselves back in position to leave Shannon unbeaten. The Red Raiders had to drive for a touchdown; a close game and a good effort would not rescue their night.
That was the difference between the lead changes earlier and the one Shannon now needed. There was little time left to trade another possession. The Red Raiders had to finish this one.
They pushed the ball to the goal line, where the game tightened into a few yards of crowded field. Pontotoc kept Shannon out on the earlier attempts. The Red Raiders were close, but close still left them trailing by three.
By fourth down, with approximately 20 seconds remaining before the snap, the entire evening had narrowed to one play. Pontotoc needed one more stop. Shannon needed a way through.
Conner went around the left side and reached the end zone for the touchdown that changed the lead for the final time. Shannon’s two-point attempt failed, keeping the margin at three and leaving Pontotoc one last opening.
There was still work for the Red Raiders to do. Pontotoc returned the ensuing kickoff to midfield with 11 seconds remaining, giving the Warriors a chance to steal back a game they had led moments earlier. An injury stoppage interrupted the closing sequence before play resumed.
With six seconds left, Pontotoc had its final chance through the air. Shannon batted the pass down. Only then could the Red Raiders put away a night in which neither side had been able to shake the other.
For Shannon, the finish turned a late deficit into a homecoming win and rewarded an offense that kept responding when Pontotoc moved ahead. For the Warriors, it was the first loss of the season after an effort that brought them back from a second-half deficit and left them one defensive stop from protecting their record.
Tempers briefly flared after the final play, with pushing and shoving between players from both teams near Pontotoc’s sideline. Emotions ran high on both sidelines, but coaches quickly restored composure and the teams separated.
Both teams now turn to region play Friday, October 9. Pontotoc faces West Point, while Shannon meets Houston. Both kickoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m. Central.
Thursday’s NMSN Game of the Week, presented by Impact Health Clinics, gave each team plenty to carry into that next test. Pontotoc showed it could fight its way back. Shannon showed it could finish when the room for another answer was almost gone.
