MANTACHIE, Miss. Hatley has already shown it can win a close game on the road. Then the Tigers showed they can climb out of a hole that looked almost impossible.
Tonight, Hatley takes that 2–0 start into Mustang Stadium to face Mantachie in the NMSN Game of the Week. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. CT, followed by kickoff at 7.
The setting changes. The challenge does not. For a third consecutive Friday, Seth Lee's Tigers will have to handle somebody else's crowd and find a way to finish away from home.
Hatley arrives with proof
Hatley's record says 2–0. The way the Tigers reached it says more.
They opened with a 24–18 victory at Nettleton, then walked into Thomas Carroll Field last Friday and fell behind Smithville 20–0. Hatley scored just before halftime, owned the second half and finished a 22–20 rivalry comeback with 22 unanswered points.
Senior Chris Foster was at the center of it. The NMSN Player of the Week completed all six of his passes for 127 yards and a touchdown, then added 68 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. His 60-yard scoring pass to Brody Dickerson pulled Hatley within four, and Foster's fourth-quarter rushing touchdown supplied the winning points.
Hatley's defense did the rest. The Tigers shut Smithville out after halftime and turned the Seminoles away inside the 10-yard line late in the fourth quarter.
That combination — Foster's versatility, a running game that kept getting stronger and a defense that held when the field became short — is what Hatley carries into Mantachie.
Mantachie's ground game demands attention
Mantachie is 1–1, but the record does not tell the whole story of an offense that has scored 70 points in two games.
The Mustangs ran for 272 yards in a 28–25 opening loss at Holly Springs. Senior Jon Luke Hood carried the biggest share of that night, rushing for 130 yards and a touchdown. Mantachie came home a week later and broke through with a 45–26 victory over Ashland.
Senior quarterback MacIah Morgan drove that win with 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns on only five carries. Sophomore quarterback Canon Jones completed 4 of 6 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown, and senior Mason Jenkins caught two passes for 42 yards and the score.
Through two games, Morgan leads Mantachie with four rushing touchdowns and averages 69.5 yards on the ground. Hood averages 96 rushing yards and has scored three times. Junior Blake Wood adds 49 rushing yards per game, giving the Mustangs three runners averaging at least 49 yards.
That production gives Mantachie a clear identity. The Mustangs can spread the carries, create explosive runs from the quarterback position and force Hatley to account for multiple ball carriers on every series.
The defense has names to watch, too. Freshman linebacker Brantley Scott leads Mantachie at 9.5 tackles per game and has a sack. Junior Carson McMillen averages 5.5 tackles, while Wood averages five and has shared a sack. Jenkins owns the Mustangs' interception through the first two games.
Mantachie gets this one on its own field, and Mustang Stadium gives the Mustangs the chance to change the tone early and make Hatley chase the game for a second straight week.
The first quarter matters. Hatley cannot count on another 20-point escape, and Mantachie cannot afford to let the Tigers settle into the same physical second-half rhythm that wore down Smithville.
For Mantachie, the path starts with limiting explosive plays and keeping Foster from turning broken-down situations into first downs. For Hatley, it starts with fitting the run correctly against Morgan, Hood and Wood, playing cleaner football on its opening possessions and bringing the same defensive discipline that carried the comeback last Friday.
