MANTACHIE, Miss. A week after Hatley pulled off a comeback worth talking about, Mantachie gave the Tigers a painful look at the other side of one.
The Mustangs erased a nine-point second-half deficit, survived a fourth quarter that included a controversial touchdown-erasing penalty against Hatley and drove 80 yards for the winning score Friday night. Their 22-16 victory at Mustang Stadium handed the Tigers their first loss and gave Mantachie its second straight win.
Both teams finished the night 2-1. Getting there took a game that stayed unsettled long after Hatley appeared to have an opportunity to put it away.
The Tigers arrived with two close road victories, including a rally from 20 points down to beat Smithville 22-20 the previous Friday. At Mantachie, they would spend much of the night protecting a lead.
Senior quarterback MacIah Morgan put Mantachie in front first. Taking a direct snap from the Hatley 27, No. 8 broke two tackles, reached the right side and carried it into the end zone. The extra point gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.
Koltan Brown answered with a 3-yard touchdown run and ran in the two-point conversion. Hatley's 8-7 lead survived a scoreless second quarter.
Brody Dickerson gave the Tigers breathing room after halftime, breaking a 65-yard touchdown run. Brown added another two-point conversion, and suddenly the Mustangs needed two scores.
Morgan supplied the answer late in the third quarter. On another keeper, he bounced off two defenders and scored his second touchdown of the night. The extra point trimmed the deficit to 16-14. Hatley still had the lead as the game moved into the fourth, but the Mustangs had brought it back within one score.
Then came the play that left Hatley with a touchdown to think about and no points to show for it. In the early-to-middle portion of the fourth quarter, with the Tigers ahead 16-14, an apparent Hatley touchdown was wiped out when officials called illegal hurdling. Had it counted, the lead would have grown to eight before the conversion attempt.
The distinction in the rule is the defender's position: NFHS Rules 2-22 and 9-4-3d prohibit an attempted feet- or knees-first hurdle over an opponent who has only one or both feet on the ground, even without contact. A defender with another body part on the ground does not meet that definition. Mississippi adopts the NFHS football code under MHSAA Handbook Sections 7.10.1-7.10.2. Whether this particular play met that standard requires a clear replay, but its effect on the game was immediate: Hatley's cushion disappeared.
The Tigers came away from that possession without scoring and gave up the ball. They would not score again.
Mantachie's defense did the work that kept the margin at two during that stretch. The Mustangs stopped Hatley on downs at their own 13, only to lose a fumble that handed the Tigers another opportunity at the Mantachie 20. The defense went back out and held again, returning the ball to an offense that now had 80 yards between it and the end zone.
The winning possession was no easy escape. With about four minutes remaining, the MaxPreps scoring log had Mantachie facing fourth down at its own 33. The next update put the Mustangs at their 44 with a fresh set of downs. They had found a way to keep going.
Jon Luke Hood finished it. The senior running back took the handoff, broke two tackles, bounced outside and raced down the right side for the touchdown that put Mantachie ahead 20-16. Hood followed with the two-point run that made it 22-16. Hatley did not score again.
The Mustangs had scored the game's final 15 points and held Hatley scoreless in the fourth. A night that had tilted toward the Tigers after halftime belonged to Mantachie.
The Tigers rushed for 226 yards on 31 carries, led by Dickerson's 96 yards and a touchdown on just four attempts. Heatan Humbers added 61 yards on seven carries. Brown ran for 36 yards and a score, then led Hatley's defense with 16 tackles, including three for loss.
Dickerson and Kaleb Griffin each recorded 10 tackles. Humbers had nine, with two for loss, while Carson Armstrong recorded a sack. Chris Foster completed six of 15 passes for 51 yards and two interceptions.
Mantachie travels to Smithville on Friday, September 18. Hatley returns home to face Ashland. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
Hatley goes home with a disputed call and opportunities it could not turn into points. Mantachie goes to Smithville knowing what it did with the opening: two defensive stands, a long drive and a lead it finally made hold up.
